DEALING WITH ANGRY, CHALLENGING OR EXPLOSIVE CHILDREN: USING COLLABORATIVE & PROACTIVE SOLUTIONS!

CENTREMDC’s Institute of Neurocognitive Initiatives presents

Do you live or work with a child who …

Reacts to directions, requests or the answer “no” in a negative, explosive way?
Makes you feel like you are always “walking on eggshells” or “putting out fires”?
Challenges you at every turn?
Do you feel that you have tried everything and nothing seems to work?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this workshop is for you!

Based on over 30 years of neurocognitive research and his own extensive clinical research experience, Dr. Greene developed the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions Approach to treat challenging, angry and oppositional children. Dr. Greene believes that all children do well if they can. He views challenging behavior as the result of lagging cognitive skills, especially in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, emotion regulation and problem-solving (executive function skills). His approach emphasizes supporting rather than blaming challenging children – as well as their parents and educators.

Dr. Greene’s model helps adults and children become skilled at defusing conflict and resolving problems collaboratively, while teaching children the cognitive skills they lack. This method has been found effective in a variety of settings, including families, general and special education school settings, group homes, inpatient psychiatric units and juvenile detention facilities. More recently, Dr. Greene has extended his teaching and writings to include how to use this model with all children in all environments.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand why traditional reward and punishment strategies may not be effective
  • Identify and assess the various cognitive skills that are central to adaptively handling life’s social, emotional and behavioral challenges
  • Identify and prioritize the unsolved problems precipitating challenging behavior
  • Know how to effectively implement collaborative problem-solving to teach skills, resolve problems and reduce the frequency and intensity of challenging behavior
  • Continental breakfast, lunch and coffee breaks included. Free parking.
